ALL ARTISTS PLEASE ANSWER – Describe your dream studio?
I am curious to know about your current art studio, whether its at home, or school, or another location…is it disorganized? And what sort of equipment do you use now? and if you could design your own modern studio with no limit on costs, what would it look like? what would your easels, tables, and carts for materials (paints, palettes, turps) be made of? Wood, metal, plastic???
I am an artist and want to advocate the renovation of studio art programs in schools. I want to know what sort of materials and equipment artists out there are curious or have desire to use…
I believe that a modern art studio would have equipment made of non-pourous surfaces…metals. but would be made so that they would not corrode or be affected by turpentines, and acids used in creating art. Also clay – which i do not work with much,…how would an ideal studio for ceramics and sculpture look to you?
First of all I work in a variety of materials. I work with metal, I bead and I carve and print rubber stamps. For years and years I wove and taught weaving. I also the sewing machine as a drawing tool. I am currently living in a very large house. My former weaving studio is where I am currently using my computer. It was the formal living room to previous owners. My sewing room is the size of a nursery. I bead on a large drawing table [antique]. I carve my stamps in a room called by previous owners a games room. I do my printing standing up in the laundry room. This is far from ideal. I will probably always print in the laundry room because the height is right and water is readily available. I would prefer a different place to carve my stamps. I like where I bead it feels as though I am almost outside. You perhaps noticed that I did not mention where I worked with the metals. Sometimes it is o.k. to just sit near where I bead and work there but sometimes it is better to go out to the garage to use torches and such.
For a dream studio all fiber related work would be done in one room. The light from outside would be north light and there would be ample light free storage for my fabric and threads. Metal would have it’s own room and I would have more equipment available for easy use. My carving spot would have a higher table. This studio would probably be in a space near to but not necessarily in my home. I do at times let everything wander in to the family room. I hope this helps, I interests are varied and so is m art work.
